General School

The General School offers classes in creative movement, ballet, jazz and modern dance for pre-schoolers to adults. The syllabus of the Society of Russian Ballet forms the foundation of the ballet curriculum. Students in the General School take one or multiple classes per week. As young students progress through the levels and their interest in dance increases they may be invited to enter the Intensive Training Programme.

Intensive Training Programme  (ITP)

The Intensive Training Programme, or ITP, is an intensive curriculum of study for the young dance student who wishes to train multiple days per week. Students are given an individual schedule, which reflects their level of achievement in each of the technical disciplines and their personal goals. With this in mind the programme uses a multi-disciplinary approach to training. The graded curriculum of the Society of Russian Ballet forms the core of the programme, which is complimented with training in jazz and modern dance techniques.

To be considered for the programme students must be registered in Ballet Level Three or higher. Students must take a minimum of three classes per week totalling no less than 3.25 hours per week to participate. As students advance through the Intensive Training Programme it is expected that class lengths will increase.

Class Descriptions

Kidance 1 (3-4 years old)

Creative movement is an enjoyable way for young children to develop their physical skills, channel their energy, stimulate their imagination and promote their creativity. This class will encourage the young child’s need of expression through dramatic play, nurturing a stronger sense of self and community. There will be numerous opportunities to practice a broad variety of movement skills such as creeping, running, leaping, twisting, and galloping. Games linked to music, patterning, shape recognition and spatial awareness will support other early learning experiences.

Kidance 2 (4-5 years old)

This second level of creative movement will build upon the growing intellectual and physical abilities of the older pre-schooler. Movement exploration will be used to enhance other areas of learning such as language arts, pre-math concepts, social relationships, and the arts. More complex activities and improvisational games will provide the child with a growing sense of physical accomplishment and creativity.

Ballet

Ballet is recognised as the foundation of most theatrical dance forms. The theories and practices of the Society of Russian Ballet form the heart of our curriculum. Class material has been carefully developed to ensure a steady, healthy technical and artistic progression from one level to the next. The syllabus is a joy to dance and encourages creativity for students at every stage of their development. Fourteen levels of curriculum will guide the student from Grade Primary through to the demands of the pre-professional world.

Pre-Pointe & Pointe

Students will be invited to participate in pre-pointe and pointe classes on an individual basis. Pre-pointe classes will focus on alignment and strength training for the lower leg and feet. Also included is anatomical instruction and information on how to care for the feet and pointe shoes. At the end of this preparatory year students will be assessed for pointe readiness.

Introductory pointe classes will teach the student how to correctly sew on ribbons and prepare shoes. Students will also be guided through the pointe shoe fitting process. Once on pointe students will follow the curriculum of the Society of Russian Ballet in preparation for the vocational exam levels - Pre-Elementary through Pre-Professional.

Due to the physical demands of pointe pre-pointe and pointe classes are only open to Intensive Training Programme students. If you would like further in formation about pre-pointe training and pointe work readiness please contact the office for our handout.

Jazz

Jazz dance is composed of a number of popular dance styles of the 20th Century. Accompanied by the strong rhythms and high energy of popular music, this class will reflect a solid balance of technique and styling appropriate for the age of the children. It is highly recommended that this class be supported by ballet study.

Jazz Funk

Jazz Funk for teens is a fusion of classic jazz technique with the stylistic influences of Hip Hop and high energy music videos. For more information see the Jazz class description.
